Population
as used in this chapter refers to all people inhabiting
Negros Occidental while housing, in general, refers to the living
accommodations available for the inhabitants in this province.
Specifically, a housing unit is a structurally separate and independent
place of abode which has been constructed, converted or arranged for
habitation by one or more households. The study of the characteristics
of human population, such as size, growth, density, distribution and
other vital statistics, otherwise known as demography, is important
since, high rates of population growth, high fertility and very young
age distribution pose difficult problems on key development sectors in
health, employment, education, agriculture and urbanization.
Furthermore, housing profile is also one of the factors to be
considered in the study of the socio-economic profile of a certain
area.
These
statistical data are essential in any planning and decision
making activities and development efforts of government and private
institutions and agencies. The living conditions of the people are also
determinants of the effectiveness of the delivery of services and other
programs by the government and other non-government sectors. Business
establishments are built and investments are poured in based on the
requirements of the populace and are sustained according to the
responses of its market.
This
chapter presents statistical information
on population count as a result of several national censuses from 1960
to 2007 as well as demographic characteristics. This chapter also
includes projections of the provincial population from 2007 to 2025,
estimated based on the results of the population censuses and
demographic surveys. However, some data on housing such as tenure
status of lot occupied by housing units and occupied housing units by
type of building presented in this chapter are based on the 2000
population and housing census since the mid-year census, 2007, does not
include it as data requirement. The data sources for this chapter are
the National Statistics Office (NSO) and the Research, Evaluation and
Statistics Division (RESD) of the Provincial Planning and Development
Office (PPDO) for the population projection from 2007 to 2025.
Sectoral Highlights
Total population of Negros
Occidental, including Bacolod City, as of October 2007 reached almost
2.9 million which is 42 percent of the population in Western Visayas.
Growth rates of Negros Occidental and Bacolod City are pegged at 1.44
and 2.12, respectively from 2000-2007. Negros Occidental ranked as the
6th most populous province in the Philippines. The 2007 provincial
population increased by more than 304 thousand over the 2000 Census
figure of almost 2.6 million. On the other hand, the population
increase from 1995 census to 2000 census reached almost 132 thousand.
Based on the 2007 census, among
the 12 component cities of Negros Occidental excluding its highly
urbanized city, Kabankalan City registered the largest population at
166,970, followed by Bago and Cadiz Cities at 159,933 and 150,750,
respectively. On the other hand, the fastest growing city is Talisay
with an estimated average annual growth rate of 2.76 percent and the
fastest growing municipality is Don Salvador Benedicto with an
estimated average growth rate of 4.03 percent.
The population density of
Negros Occidental is pegged at 364 persons per square kilometer in
2007. The most densely populated area in the province is Bacolod City
with a total of 3,199 persons occupying a one-square kilometer land in
the city. This is followed by Pulupandan with 1,177 persons occupying a
one-square kilometer land. The least densely populated area is Candoni
with 113 persons per square kilometer.
The age-dependency ratio in
the province decreased by 3.61 percentage points from 75.40 percent in
1995 to 71.79 percent in 2000 which means that for every 100 persons
who are economically productive in 2000, there are more or less 72
persons dependent on them.
Old-age dependency ratio has remained at 7.14 percent and young-age
dependency ratio decreased by 4.75 percentage points from 69.22 in 1995
to 64.65 in 2000. In 2000, therefore, for every 100 persons in
economically productive ages, there are 7 old persons and 65 young
persons dependent on them.
The male–female ratio
result of Census 2000 is computed at 102. This means that for every 100
female persons, there are 102 males.

10 years old and over, 46.27 percent are single, 44.41 percent are
married, 4.55 percent are widowed, 0.69 percent are divorced/separated

Based on the census result, there are marriages occurring in age
bracket below 20 years old with greater incidence in the female
population. Furthermore, majority of the widows lie in the age bracket
60 – 64 years old, while the largest incidence of separation/divorce
occurs in the age bracket 40 – 44 years.
Majority of the Negrenses
are Roman Catholic computed at 84.74 percent of the 2,562,104 household
population. This is followed by Aglipayans with 2.56 percent and
Evangilicals at 1.98 percent. However, 0.02 percent or 626 persons
signified that they have no religious affiliation.

Negros Occidental increased to 503,663 or by 38 thousand from the 1995
figure computed at 465,429. The average household size slightly
increased to 5.32 from the 1995 figure of 5.2. This means that for
every 100 households, the number of members increased by 12 persons.
The following are the
highlights of the tenure status of the lots occupied by the 416,222
households in Negros Occidental excluding Bacolod City: 58.84 percent –
rent free with the consent of owner; 25.65 percent – owned/being
